چکیده

The consideration of binary lenses is crucial in the analysis of self-lensing in microlensing surveys. A binary event presents high magnification peaks when the source crosses the caustic curve. We compute the rates of caustic crossing events both for resolved sources, such as towards the galactic bulge, and for unresolved sources, as in pixel microlensing. We find that the relative number of caustic crossing events in a pixel microlensing survey is comparable to that in a classical survey with resolved stars. The two competing effects of larger region of high magnification and more severe finite source effects approximately cancel out. A pixel microlensing survey of M87 with the Advanced Camera for Surveys to be installed on the Hubble Space Telescope could observe several caustic crossing events in a month of daily monitoring, and a comparable NGST survey could observe of order 50 such events. Furthermore, such a search might be able to detect extragalactic planetary systems. Subject headings: binaries:general — gravitational lensing

Binary Events and Extragalactic Planets in Pixel Microlensing

Pixel microlensing, i.e. gravitational microlensing of unresolved stars, can be used to explore distant stellar systems, and as a bonus may be able to detect extragalactic planets. In these studies, binary-lens events with multiple high-magnification peaks are crucial. Considering only those events which exhibit caustic crossings, we estimate the fraction of binary events in several example pix...

Repeating microlensing events in the OGLE data

Microlensing events are usually selected among single-peaked non-repeating light curves in order to avoid confusion with variable stars. However, a microlensing event may exhibit a second microlensing brightening episode when the source or/and the lens is a binary system. A careful analysis of these repeating events provides an independent way to study the statistics of wide binary stars and to...

Improved Detection Rates for Close Binaries Via Astrometric Observations of Gravitational Microlensing Events

In addition to constructing a Galactic matter mass function free from the bias induced by the hydrogen-burning limit, gravitational microlensing allows one to construct a mass function which is less affected by the problem of unresolved binaries (Gaudi & Gould). However, even with the method of microlensing, the photometric detection of binaries is limited to binary systems with relatively larg...

Binary Microlensing Events from the MACHO Project

We present the lightcurves of 21 gravitational microlensing events from the first six years of the MACHO Project gravitational microlensing survey which are likely examples of lensing by binary systems. These events were manually selected from a total sample of ∼ 350 candidate microlensing events which were either detected by the MACHO Alert System or discovered through retrospective analyses o...

The effect of variation of stellar dispersion velocities by the galactic latitude in interpreting gravitational microlensing observations

Our galaxy is a spiral galaxy and its stars are mostly in a thin disk and rotate around the galactic center. The vertical component of the dispersion velocity of stars is a function of the galactic latitude and decreases with increasing it. In the galactic Besancon model, this dependence is ignored and they just consider the dependence of dispersion velocity on the stellar age. Becanson model i...
